Do you have a showroom or show modesl?
No. That would be pretty expensive and hike up your costs. We don't have salespeople either. If you need to envision what you'll need for a layout there are several ways to get a very close idea: 1. Measure out must-have furniture and appliances, and mark the space you think you might need in any open space (gym, yard, driveway). If you need to "feel" the space, visit your local shed dealer and look for the building that is 7' wide (your approximate interior width of an 8' building). 2. We offer a great consultation process that results in birdseye layouts of the main and loft floors from which we can build. Our planning fees are low, and the orginal consultation fee is deducted once you order and pay the 50% deposit of a tiny house design-build. 3. Join us for a Planning Basics Class.
How much are the Weelhouses?
We are custom design-builders. Every, EVERY ready-to-live-in tiny house on wheels is unique. For a full time living space encompassed in the average 20-footer configuration, it's realistic to spend 49,000. You will purchase a solid, New England weather-ready Weelhouse that is professionally designed and equipped with appliances, heat system, and the means to hook up to electricity and water. We do not use the lowest end junk components or appliances! We can also build a "Weelshell" for you to which you can add walls, finishes, etc. Choose whether only the exterior is complete or not. You can save 15-30% for a Weelshell.

For all Weelhouses there are a substantial number of factors that determine the estimate: how many people/animals will live in it, your choice of architectural style/details, number of lofts, furniture, materials, appliances and more. The most sustainable/green materials are often more expensive. Please fill in the Contact form for more information.
Can I really save money building or buying a tiny house?
Yes. Even a tiny house on a foundation offers considerable savings over time. Tiny houses on wheels, our Weelhouses, are cheaper to construct and maintain, including utility fees. You can rely on a bigger nest egg for retirement and subsidize a lifetime of quality, more sustainable living!
Where is parking permitted?
There are hundreds of towns in New England. Within those towns are zones, which have their own permissible building type/use limits. THNE can not know where tiny houses are permitted for full time living. -Individuals must research each town in which they want to live to discover what is permitted for an RV or mobile home type of residence. To make this easier, think about the communities you know that have mobile homes, or waterfront cottage communities as the town may have favorable zoning. You won't know for sure until you see the CURRENT restrictions, normally found online on a per-town basis.

There are other possibilities where renting or temporary living is concerned but year-round parking for a tiny house requires research for most folks! There are towns that are flexible about zoning. Most of these towns exist in the more rural areas; western MA, NH away from the coast, VT, parts of ME, where there actually is space (i.e., minimum development). Remember, New England is "oulde". We've used most of the housing space already along the coast and even quite a bit inland. We suggest that you get to know the zoning (especially RV and mobile home bylaws) for a few towns you really like. There are other rental space options, all outside city limits, such as farms for workers, and 'lots of land owned by people who would simply appreciate the added income and will rent space to you. Reach out!

For part time or seasonal living, you have hundreds of more options: state and national parks and various campgrounds, from the plush-with-pool, to the "parking space only" camping sites will normally welcome a tiny house on wheels that meets safety standards similar to a traditional RV. What do we do with the sewage?
There are a few options, depending on your parking:
1. Composting toilets if you have access to a roomy, safe and remote place to dump the human compost-in-progress (peat moss, hay is added to the toilet for this process to occur). Outdoors, it sits approx. (2) years until it becomes garden-grade compost (or drive it away to a facility that will accept human waste. Please inquire in your region)
2. An RV type toilet that flushes the human waste with a minimum of water into a tank connected below the trailer - which then can be emptied for a fee at licensed facility such as a RV campground or a marine. Or try one of the companies that clean septic tanks or port-a-potties on a scheduled basis.
3. Incinerating toilets
4. Tying into sewer or septic may or may not be legal in your town. It shouts to the Town, "We're just here to avoid paying taxes, sorry!". Please inquire with the town for all sewage matters. Laws pertaining to safe, sanitary management of sewage and water protection have evolved over 1000's of years. Criteria for tiny houses will not become less stringent. Please work with your town for the safety of the environment.
What is the typical weight of a tiny house?
It does depend on architectural style, appliances and materials, but a tiny house measuring 20 feet in length might be approximately 10,000 lbs. give or take 1000 lbs
Do I need a special permit to tow my house?
If the house is not wider than 8.5', taller than 13.5' and not more than 40' long (we only build to 32') and weighs less than 26,000 lbs including the towing vehicle, it appears you do not need a special permit. We're not committing to the weight portion of that answer. Please check your State's laws.
What are the recommended dimensions of a tiny house?
The maximum width can not exceed 8.5 feet. Adding anything to the width, including something as small as a spotlight or roofing, factors into that max. width. The max. height, from grade to the tip of the roof, can not exceed 13.5 feet. It is not possible to express what is "too tiny" for any customer since every tiny home is always a vast change in environment from a standard sized home, no matter how long the building is, with square footage ranging from approx. less than 150 sq feet to 350 sq feet (including loft spaces). Living in a tiny house is a "yes or no" proposition; you love it or you don't. A few more square feet are added normally for necessary components - but not for a feeling of "spaciousness".

In our experience, for short term living (e.g., weeks, weekends), 18-20 feet is probably comfortable for a single occupant, or 24' for a couple. For full time use, 20-24' might work for a single person, or over 24' for a couple. For a family, we recommend 28' minimum allowing a sense of separated space; the kitchen and the living area, and also a couple of sleeping lofts.
Our Weelhouses exceed RV manufacturing parameters. Meeting the Northeast weather challenges and being fully insulated, energy efficiency, and fire and electrical safety measures are a top priority. Our tiny house construction meets the quality standards desired of NH, MA, VT, ME, CT, RI, and upper NY State. They can be lived in year-round. Static tiny houses are built to standard residential code (Note you must have a frost wall).
Whenever possible, US or New England manufactured products are used. Less travel (fuel) is one facet of sustainable consumption.
SIPS are not currently used because of the high cost. SIPS or Structural Insulated Panels would make a tiny house unaffordable for most people. Please ask specifically if you want yours built with SIPS.
Does the roof keep out a lot of noise?
Yes, the roof is highly insulated, which reduces the majority of weather related noise. Metal roofs also last almost ten years longer than asphalt shingled roofs and also resist snow build up and ice dams.
Where are tiny houses constructed?
Our houses are constructed by long experienced Northeast builders and craftspeople at various local sites. We do not maintain a static work space to view homes in progress, and do not allow non-workers in work areas for everyone's safety. We will, however, provide photos of homes-in-progress for the customer.
What is the risk of damage when transporting?
Generally speaking, not much. Alert driving, at or below the speed limit, is the best insurance to keep you and your tiny house safe. Tiny houses are very sturdy and most are meant to endure repeated driving and weather conditions (some are built to be towed once only to their parking location). Standard THNE Weelhouses that will be towed regularly have windows that are made with tempered glass.
Just as an RV or mobile home, towing a heavy and long building behind you takes some practice. It should be noted that unlike standard mobile homes and RVs, the tiny houses, being wood-built, are usually parked and lived in for months, years, a lifetime!

Important: Customers must research on their own what is permitted for permanent parking of tiny houses on wheels (thow) housing in the town/city where they plan to park and live. You can review town's camping, RV and/or mobile home regulations, normally posted online in their zoning bylaws document. If it's not online than you can go to the town/city hall and review the documents, or [normally] for a fee, get a copy. Fees will also differ town to town. Highly developed regions like eastern MA and RI have more stringent regulations, but again, if there are exceptions you won't know unless you check the town's zoning restrictions.

If you plan to have built and then use the tiny house as an RV/camper; i.e., towing it to campgrounds and RV sites, then the above paragraph is not relevant.
For tiny houses that are not on wheels (for the purposes of research, any residence that is unconventionally small for a particular building zone), you must know the town's minimum building size requirements and realize that the house must meet all building code requirements as well. You can not legally set an offgrid house on cinder blocks permanently and live in it yearround, or remove a garage and use the slab as a foundation in the Northeast.
